Candle Care

Thank you so much for your interest in our curiously inspired, honestly crafted soy fragrance candles.

We love burning our candles and we hope you will too! All of our candles are paraffin, paraben, sulfate, lead and dye free! We use only the highest quality 100% all-natural soy wax, along with premium fragrance oils and all-natural cotton or wooden wicks, in our crafting process so that you may safely enjoy all of the glowing ambiance of burning your candle without all of the harmful additives and toxins that are produced in more traditional candles. However, soy wax can be rather finicky at times, since it is a natural vegetable-based wax made from dehydrated soybean oil -- so please take note of the following candle care notes in order to keep your soy fragrance candle burning in its cleanest form:

  • The first time you light your candle please make sure to burn it for at least two to three hours, or until the wax is melted to the edges of the container and the melt pool (melted wax) is at least 1/4" deep. This first burn is memorized by the wax and therefore will create a more even and clean burn during subsequent times.

  • Always trim the wick to at least 1/4" before every new lighting.

  • Keep candle out of direct sunlight and away from other external extreme temperature sources.

  • If using a wooden wick please keep away from any drafts as wooden wicks tend to extinguish rather easily.

  • Keep lid snapped on candle vessel when not in use.

  • Do not burn the candle more than four hours at a time.

  • Discard cooled candle when there is 1/2" wax left in the bottom of the container.

And of course, please follow all safety warnings to prevent fires and potential serious injuries:

  • Always burn your candle within sight; never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Keep away from all drafts and vibrations.

  • Burn candles only in well-ventilated areas.

  • Keep out of reach from all children and pets.

  • Do not fall asleep while a candle is still lit and burning.

  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that is flammable.

  • Only burn your candle on a level, fire-resistant, surface.

  • Do not ingest or eat candle wax... no matter how good it smells!

More About Your Cat & Cricket Soy Wax Candle

All of our soy wax fragrance candles are created and hand-poured in small batches. So, each batch ends up being just slightly different from the last, which is what makes our candles so unique. Some candles, when received, may have a few appearance imperfections such as, small top indents or a frosty wax appearance against the side of the jar. Other candles, especially those that contain a higher vanillin content or fragrances like coconut, cinnamon and even some apple scents, may also contain a rusty red or yellowed appearance between the wax and the inside of our tin containers -- or it may even discolor the wax itself. Please note, these imperfections and discolorations are normal features of soy wax and do not affect the burn time or the fragrance. In fact, typically after burning your soy candle your wax may not look smooth at all but rather like used Crisco shortening, with all sorts of funny looking holes and lines. Again, this is 100% normal for all-natural soy wax candles and does not interfere with the burn time or the fragrance.

However, if you have the following flame issues please do the following:

  • If the flame is too large and is smoking a lot you probably have a mushrooming wick: Extinguish the flame, trim wick to 1/4" and relight.

  • If flame is too small and looks like it's about to extinguish itself: You either trimmed the wick too small or you have too much melted wax surrounding the wick. Extinguish the flame and carefully pour out a little bit of the melted wax into the drain and then relight. If you trimmed the wick too small you may just need to dig away a little circle of the hardened wax around the wick, discard it, then relight.

Another issue you may encounter is called tunneling. This occurs when the wax isn't melting at the edges of the tin and is instead creating a tunnel down the middle of the candle as it burns. This is usually the result of not initially burning your candle long enough; therefore, why it is so important to burn for three to four hours on the initial burn. If you can, try to burn at longer intervals to correct the issue. And if the wick starts to suffocate then drain some of the melted wax out of the candle, trim, and relight for several hours.

Our 4-8 ounce sized candles are designed for smaller rooms and therefore you may not always receive a good hot throw (drifting fragrance when candle is lit) if you are burning the candle in a large open space/room with open windows or drafts. Soy wax doesn't provide the same wafting hot throw that traditional paraffin candles are known for. Instead, natural soy candles are designed to provide a clean, subtle scent. So, don't give up if you don't smell your candle fragrance when it is burning... instead, try relocating your soy candle to a smaller room, like a bedroom or a bathroom. And if you prefer, we offer our 16 oz. double wicked candles for larger spaces. So fill those rooms up with candles!!
